"About Skin" June 2023

“About Skin” by Yen MD
June 2023

Tip of the month: Did you know skin is our largest organ by weight? As the most accessible organ, it deserves our time and effort!

To celebrate Father’s Day in the month of June, we devote and dedicate this month’s blog to men skin health. Could you or the men in your life benefit from better skin care? The answer is a big “YES”!! It is time to separate fact from fiction and debunk some of the most common skincare myths. So here is half a dozen of common myths:

1. Myth: Men do not need to moisturize.
Fact: Despite being thicker, men’s skin can still experience dryness, dehydration, and environmental damage. Moisturizing is essential for everyone.

2. Myth: Sunscreen is only necessary on sunny days.
Fact: Sunscreen is a must every day, regardless of the weather. Harmful UV rays can penetrate clouds and reach your skin. Make it a habit to apply sunscreen as the last step in your daily skincare routine, rain or shine.

3. Myth: Shaving makes hair grow back thicker and darker.
Fact: Shaving does not alter the color, thickness, or rate of hair growth. It may appear darker or coarser because shaving cuts the hair bluntly, giving it a different appearance as it regrows. Over time, new hair growth will return to its natural state.

4. Myth: More skincare products yield better results.
Fact: Using too many products or layering them excessively can overwhelm the skin and potentially lead to irritation. Stick to a simple and effective routine tailored to your specific needs. Quality over quantity is the key to achieving optimal results.

5. Myth: Natural skincare products are always better.
Fact: While natural ingredients can be great, not all synthetic ingredients are harmful. The best skincare routines combine a balance of natural and scientifically proven synthetic ingredients. The key is to choose the right products for you and apply them consistently.

6. Myth: Anti-aging products are only for older men.
Fact: By the age of 20, you have already experienced your two most consequential decades of sun damage. Sun induced skin damage starts earlier than you think, and prevention is key. In addition to sunscreens, anti-aging products can benefit men of all ages by addressing early signs, promoting collagen production, and protecting the skin from accumulating damage going forward. You are never too young or too old to start incorporating anti-aging into your skincare routine.
The more you know, the better you can care for your skin. And remember, we always recommend consulting a board-certified skincare professional to get the best advice for your special skin needs.
