Antioxidants and Free Radicals, Friends or Foes?

The terms "free radicals" and "antioxidants" are everywhere!! Are they friends or foes? A brief information about them and their impact on skin health is the topic of our blog this month.

What are Free Radicals?

Simply put, free radicals are unstable molecules formed on the skin through sources like UV radiation and pollution. These molecules cause cell damage, inflammation, premature aging, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Wrinkles, fine lines, discolored age spots, rough skin texture all lead to a dull complexion are signs of damage caused by free radicals.

Enter Antioxidants

Introducing the superheroes of the skincare world—antioxidants! Antioxidants are natural substances that have the power to neutralize free radicals, the villains. Once radicals are formed, antioxidants sequester and neutralize them to prevent damage. Think of them as the next level of protector after sunscreens to help prevent or minimize sun damage to our skin.

Common Antioxidants and Their Sources

Antioxidants can be found in various foods, skincare products, and supplements. Here are a few of some commonly known antioxidants and their natural sources:

  • Vitamin C: Citrus, berries, kiwi, bell peppers,

  • Vitamin E: Nuts, seeds, spinach, avocado

  • Green Tea Extract: Green tea leaves

  • Resveratrol: Grapes, berries, red wine

  • CoQ10: Fish (salmon, sardines), spinach, broccoli

Incorporating Antioxidants into Your Skincare Routine

  • Topical Products: Look for skincare products with antioxidants

  • Be sure to have antioxidants in your daily skin care routines

  • Sun Protection: Use sunscreen to defend against UV radiation, which generates free radicals

Free radicals can wreak havoc on our skin, leading to premature aging and other skin concerns. However, by incorporating antioxidants into our daily routine, we can fight these troublemakers. Remember, antioxidant-rich diet and skincare products, along with adequate sun protection are all crucial elements of maintaining healthy and youthful-looking skin.
